Five Foods You Should Try in Austin, Texas

If you’ve never been to the Lone Star State, you’re in for a treat! From the big city in Dallas to the small coastal towns, you’ll love the friendly people and all the diverse and delicious offerings the state has to offer. There is no better place to treat your taste buds than the city’s capitol, Austin. With its chill vibe and and commitment to staying “weird,” you’ll love the culinary variety that awaits you.

Deluxe Tex-Mex

If you like tacos, burritos, salsa, and guacamole, you’ll love the southwestern spin on this delectable fare that you’ll find in Austin! Austin is famous for its Tex-Mex restaurants that offer deep fried avocados. These beauties are peeled and stuffed with your choice of meat and tons of cheese before being breaded to perfection and deep fried to a toasty brown. When you cut into your avocado masterpiece, the golden goodness of the cheese will warm your stomach and your heart!

Consuming Kolaches

Though it originated in the Czech Republic, the Kolache is one of Austinites’ favorite treats. Kolaches usually come filled with fruit, but Austin fills its kolaches with delicious smoked sausage. The sausage is wrapped in a heavenly pastry made with plenty of butter. The result is a delicious breakfast meat rolled in a soft, puffy, warm, buttery pastry. Top it off with your choice of fruit preserves or some salsa if you’re feeling adventurous. If you’re an herbivore, never fear. You can still get that divine pastry filled with fruit!

Barbecue? Don’t Mind If I do!

Texas is famous for its take on barbecue. You’ll find no shortage of grilled and smoked offerings throughout the city of Austin. Beef brisket is slow smoked to perfection over the course of 8 hours as the grill-master applies and reapplies marinade.  Imagine beef brisket so tender and juicy it melts in your mouth! Grab some sides, like baked macaroni with green chiles and house made slaw, and you’ll be ready for a meal you won’t forget! You can even ask for a piece of Texas toast, and you’ll feel like a bonafide “foodie” building and snapping photos of your (maybe not so) artfully constructed sandwich.

Roll Into Round Rock

You can’t visit Austin without making a trip to its northern suburb, Round Rock, to get your hands on one of the famous Round Rock donuts. These cake donuts are a regional favorite. Made from yeast-risen dough and hand rolled, these donuts are so Texas-tasty they cannot be made by a machine. On busy days, bakers roll up to 200 of these little ovals of joy! Famous for their yellow color, which comes from the fresh eggs used in the batter, these donuts come glazed or with chocolate on top! If you want a real treat, opt for a Texas-sized donut, and you’ll get a donut about the size of your face! You’ll want to be sure to snap a photo of that and preserve that memory forever. Such a donut cannot be forgotten, and after all, everything’s bigger in Texas!

Migas, Amigos

Austinites don’t mind having breakfast for dinner when it comes to flavorful migas. “Migas” means “crumbs” in Spanish, but these mouthwatering tacos are anything but! The chef starts with scrambling eggs, which are mixed in with crushed tortilla chips (these are the crumbs). All of this goes on a freshly hand-made flour tortilla and topped with pico de gallo (a mixture of tomatoes, onions, and cilantro) along with jalapeños. This triumph is then covered is queso fresca (fresh cheese)! Don’t let the eggs fool you! Migas are an excellent choice for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and they’re so popular in Austin, they can be found at restaurants ‘round the clock!

“Foodies” Forever

The best thing about traveling with friends and family is snapping photos so you can remember all those delectable and unique foods you tried while on vacation. Taking photos of these culinary masterpieces will help you remember your trip for years to come. Recall some of the best, most interesting food you’ve eaten while traveling to new places! Pull out those old photos of Dad wearing a bib at the lobster shack or that enormous piece of cake you ordered because, hey, it’s vacation! Memorialize the good times by digitizing your old family vacation photos and videos. These are times you won’t want to forget!
